This chapter is basically Odysseus telling the story of how he blinded the Cyclops. It thoroughly explains how he and his men were blown off course by Zeus and found themselves on the island of the Cyclopses. Odysseus describes in excruciating detail how he and his men had blinded the Cyclops and escaped his cave with "fruits of war" (valuables from the creature's cave that could be used for a feast).
